to understand color, you must learn
Color Theory

Color theory is the study of how colors interact, complement, and influence the mood and aesthetic of photographs. It provides a foundational understanding of color harmony, enabling photographers to use colors deliberately to enhance the experience and emotional impact of their images.

Take a look at these example images.

Example 1 is straight out of the camera.  Notice how the colors are muted, dull, and lack life or interest for the viewer.  You can see the color wheel looks quite chaotic and no one color stands out from the rest.  The result is a bland image that will not get a second look.

Example 2 has been edited using color theory principles.  Notice how some colors come toward you and others are pushed into the distance.  You can see the color wheel looks balanced and represents beautiful triadic harmony. The result is a powerful image that makes a statement and builds a unique experience for the viewer.

Working with color is very similar to meeting people; you only get ONE first impression with your viewer.

Do you want that first impression to be cold, callous, and muddy?

Or

Would you rather captivate their senses and leave them breathless with your astute attention to color detail?

Why You Should Consider “The COLOR Course”?

Take a look at all these color tools in Photoshop.
Looks scary, huh?

I don’t want these tools to be your enemy.  I want them to be your greatest ally in the battle for better color.

If you you find yourself mashing sliders and bouncing from one color tool to the next, then you don’t have a good grasp on color.  All of these tools have a specific place where they work best in your color workflow.  BUT if you don’t have a color workflow, you could end up with a muddy color mess.

The COLOR Course WILL show you how to use these tools in great detail, but more importantly, it will give you an actionable workflow that you can implement as soon as you learn it!

Look, YOU DON’T HAVE TO STRUGGLE WITH COLOR ANYMORE!
There is a helpful solution for you and it’s RIGHT HERE!

Actions for Photoshop

In the first module of the color course, we will take a deep dive into Color Theory.  We will cover the basics of color, color interaction, and color tools.  We will slowly transition into how these color concepts will help you with your photography.

Module 2 will introduce you to my color workflow.   I will show you how to get the most out of your colors with Photoshop’s color tools.  But more importantly, we will apply these tools to a specific workflow that will make your color work more successful.

In this Module, I will cover the many “use cases” for color and color theory.  These are very specific ways I use color that don’t necessarily fall into one of the workflow categories.

Here is a detailed list of every gradient that comes with the course.  You can use these in your own work with quick access to an impressive combination of moods.  I even took the time to clean up my extensive gradients.  It was time!

Out of Camera • VS • Color Theory

Color Theory & People

Color Theory isn’t just for landscape images.  Color Theory is for any image that you want to make an impact with.  Using color theory in Portraits, you can make a more uniform color palette for your subject.

You don’t need fancy gels and lights to get this look.  I made this look with one gradient in Photoshop.  One well-placed gradient, and we can have a better experience with this gentleman’s facial features and connect better with him.

Color is such a strong element in portrait photographs.  You can change the way the viewer is going to see and interact with your subjects with a simple, yet affective color addition.

Color Theory & The Camera

This is probably my favorite example of how my camera failed me when photographing a colorful scene.  If you could have been on that rock with me, you would have seen a brilliant blue/magenta overcast sky briefly interrupted by a blast of orange light.  It was so exhilarating that it brought tears to my eyes.

What happened in the camera?  Well,  the camera can only compensate for one color with one white balance at a time.  Had it been in tune with color theory it would have applied an orange white balance to the foreground and sunset and a blue white balance to the sky and the trees in the distance.  Alas, our cameras aren’t that intuitive and that’s impossible with todays technology!

DO NOT settle for your camera’s limitations DO NOT let them hold you back from the color you DESERVE!

Color Theory & Mood

Nothing is more impactful on the viewer’s experience with your work than color. Color can give your work meaning and build an incredible experience for your viewer. It can transform how they look at the world, BUT you can’t expect the camera to do this for you.

I wanted this image to be lively and hopeful, not dark and dreary. If I let the camera speak for me, how would the viewer feel looking at the image?

Well, you are the viewer. How do you feel?
How does the color image make you feel?
See, or should I say “feel”, the difference?

Color Theory & Compositing

Color plays a vital role when building a composite.  A composite is two or more images combined to make a piece of photographic art.

As you can see with this chicken, the image straight out of the camera lacks depth and color.  The camera did its best to capture the chickens’ beautiful feathers.  However, White balance was my enemy here!

It metered for the orange feathers, which made the orange portions of the feathers stand out, but look at the black portions of the feathers.  They became a dull grey instead of a deep and rich black (like I saw the chicken when I photographed it).

This is a complex image to post-process because you can’t use one white balance correction to fix it.  You have to know what parts of the image need what color or tonal value.  The lay photographer would miss this and accept that the color was correct.

Someone trained in color theory would know how to fix that AND find an incredible background to complement it.

Color Theory & Vision

I remember this shot. Clear as day!  It was a clear day, a bright one at that and I really wanted this to feel like sunset, but the sun wasn’t doing what I wanted it to.  Did I let that bother me?  NOPE!

While I was on location, I chose an extended shutter speed to make the water and clouds appear dramatic.  It was about an 8-minute exposure at 4 PM.  As I was standing there, I knew for sure that I could make this image come to life in post-production.

Using color and some of my favorite color tools in Ps, I turned this harsh, bright, sunny day image into a tranquil, serene scene at sunset.

Then this course is perfect for you!  Gosh I wish I had this knowledge when I was a beginner, it would have set me up for success and I wouldn’t have developed so many bad color habits.  Furthermore, I would have saved hundreds of dollars because of bad preset and software purchases.

I have seen some of your other Color Theory work, is this new?

In the Palette Effects and Zone System Express course material, I have an entire module on color theory.  Some of what I teach in this course will be a refresher if you’ve seen that, but I’d say that only accounts for maybe 5% of the course.

My panel courses are primarily about my panels. They focus on the use of the panel with a mention of Color Theory.  This course is strictly about working with color and developing a strong color workflow.

After that, you can use my panels, my peer’s panels, or almost ANY post-production software with more comfort as you’ll know so much more about color.  I didn’t want to convoluted this course, so you won’t see me using my panels in it.

I have your BEYOND Color Gradients Course, is this different?

Yes, it’s much different.  The BEYOND Color Course only covers gradients.

This course is a comprehensive look at color theory as it applies to every aspect of color in your workflow.  I will touch on gradients in this course, but not as extensively as I did in the BEYOND Color course.

Consider this the “prequel” to the BEYOND Color course.
