Is this any good? Is it right? What would others say?
Ever heard this nagging voice in the back of your mind, when you try to create a photo that is more than just a document?
I had no idea of what a load of expectation, memory, emotion and disposition I carry with my when I enter a photographic scene, and how much all this can clutter the whole process from capturing to a finished image.

Iโ€™ve been a student of Blakes for years now, and I trust him, because I experienced the truth in what he teaches.
This new course, Discovering Your Vision, is no different. Blake provides a straight path from scene to the finished artistic image, a path he in person explored, experienced and refined.

The course is permission and encouragement.
It gives me permission to firmly believe in my vision and to accept that my individual perception creates my unique world.
It encourages me and sets me free to find not only my vision on a particular scene, but more – if I dare, the course opens a new horizon of how I see and express my relationship to life as a whole.

    Mindblown.

This is like no other course I have taken. If you immerse yourself in it, it doesnโ€™t really end. There is a conclusion to the content, yes, but not the personal journey it starts you on.

This is a challenging course. Donโ€™t expect to zip through and find your artistic vision waiting for you at the end of the last video like a certificate of completion. If you take your time with the material, I bet you will learn as much about yourself as an artist as you do new material.

This course has made me feel more confident, curious and fearless as I begin to more deeply explore my artistic vision. I believe it can do the same for you too.

By far this may become the most profound learning method I will never outgrow. This course is a way to continue forward from any point along the journey for any photographer at any stage in our development. It is a way to get our feet onto solid ground, away from the shifting platforms of gear, software, techniques, and workflows that must always be changing. We need the solid foundations that will help us navigate those changing platforms by dispelling some myths that can hinder our ways of seeing who we are as creative people and adding real comprehensible truth and wisdom to the way we proceed forward with a craft such as photography that involves so much subjectivity to that place we can confidently assess and develop our skills with purposeful self awareness and fewer self conscious fears and doubts.

In short, this course is doing for me what my first pair of glasses did when I put them on and realized all I’d been missing but didn’t realize it. No camera can give us that creative vision beyond making it easier to record the vision we already possess. No Ai software can read our minds and make our images come to life the way we hope beyond lending a hand to someone with the skill to understand what needs doing. Without the correct prescriptive lens in our mind’s eye, we won’t see what there is to see in the way we need or want to see, let alone our fellow compatriots that travel this journey with us. And we won’t then be able to produce the images that convey what we are deep down trying to convey.

This course lays the foundation and then imparts the necessary knowledge and methods for each photographer to make their own unique set of custom lenses that correct and amplify the visual world in a constantly refining and improving process. We return to our eye doctors for regular checkups and this is a course to return to regularly for checkups and getting adjustment to improve our creative vision.

Outstanding material detailing ways to find and improve your artistic abilities. Basically, overcoming the “I’m not an artist” and ways to show your emotions or what you felt while capturing the photo.

I’ve been on vacation for a week, so haven’t had time to look at the extended portion. However, I thought the first part was very good. As a physician, I was impressed with the depth of knowledge, erudite and simple to understand language you used. I’ve printed the PDS files into a book (Staples $25) for review. I’m hoping to put the whole thing together over the next few weeks into a practical application to my photos. At some point, I’ll need to review the whole thing again. I’m getting closer to figuring out how to create my vision. Thank you./

This course opened my mind to an in depth way of thinking about the images I create. An added benefit of the course is these are concepts I can apply to so many other areas of my life. I know I will be going back to this course often.

I have been looking for this type of information for almost 20 years. I am glad you have put emphasis on mood/emotion/mindset as well. I have found frame of mind can make or break an outing. Thank you for reminding me. I still work, so I actually watching you field sessions when your email came in. Love the course, and thank you for providing what I have been looking for, over the past decades. All the best, Tim.

    Hello Blake,
I just finished the DYV course today. And what can I say, one of the best courses I have ever taken.
It goes where it hurts. I learned very, very, very much about how to translate my visions into my images.
It’s very good that in the course you don’t explain how to edit photos, you’ve been doing that for years. This course is about the ” Why”, and that is much better than anything else.
I highly recommend this DYV course to anyone involved in photography, art, and anything in between. It makes visions possible that you didn’t even know existed.
    An absolute recommendation. Do it!

    Greetings from Hamburg

A very inciteful, deep dive into how to focus your vision in your photography to bring life to your images.

  18. Pat (verified owner)

As always, this is a great course. It is explained in a logical easy to understand way. You do not have to be a scientist to get the concepts.

  19. Raymond (verified owner)

Because I don’t go on location but rather shoot locally, this course is not completely necessary for me. But I’ve learned that every course of yours contains valuable tips for everyone. I’m a little short on time at the moment, but I’ll be sure to check it out in its entirety. I’m sure I’ll come across valuable things. Your fan, Raymond

  20. david beaubien (verified owner)

I real eye opener. this course changed my learning experience in photo art for ever. nothing is in stone and anything can be anything.its not for people who just play or just dabble in art and its a bit hard to really understand some things but when you grasp it the whole world opens for you.

I was a tad hesitant in making this purchase, but given all of the great videos that I’ve gotten, both purchased and Elite, have been extremely good. DYV has not disappointed in the least. I’ve been through module 1 twice. Just finished module 2 and had an excellent e-mail conversation with Blake where we both made some discoveries. Into module 3 and hope to finish it by Friday. For anyone who has any questions on the “why” and “how” our minds work the way they do, I think that this course will help you in figuring out your course of action.

  22. Mary Hulett (verified owner)

An excellent course, useful for everyone wanting to develop their vision in any field. Well organized with good analogies and examples. Highly recommend this course. I can’t think of anyone else who has done something like this.

  23. Richard Fiddelke (verified owner)

Blake, I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. I have had some additional medical tests and other things have kept my mind away from this. I will be checking it out probably next week. Just a lot of things going on for me right now,
    Take care my friend.

Very interesting view of vision. It has and will help me become a more insightful photographer. I discovered several issue I have when out in the field visualizing the final image. I’ve read about being “mindful” which, to me, is another way to express his way to approach photography.

I bought โ€œDiscovering my Artistic Visionโ€ at the first opportunity because Blake never fails to interest me. He has a knack of teaching what I want to know, in fact if not for Blake I would still be struggling with a simplistic knowledge of Photoshop.
I have followed his Panels and Education and I am still as enthusiastic as I was at the start. So my interest was piqued by the Artistic Vision course.
The course is very interesting because it deals with what we do .. taking photos and producing them for the interest of whoever views them and why things that we do work or donโ€™t work
It takes the education which is included with Blakeโ€™s other courses to another level.. it is necessarily deep but easy to follow in short bursts. Suitable for all levels of photographer.
I am pleased to have completed the course and will return to it.

  30. Lisa D. (verified owner)

Love this course! So glad to know what normal is for me(artistic) is ok to be different from all the engineers (husbands family) I know and talk to routinely. I am enjoying learning this journey and very pleased and excited to see growth as an artist.

It really is a topic that is hard to believe (at least for me) but, the method that Blake exposes of how to achieve the long-awaited goal, the artistic vision, makes sense.

Obviously, it is a process that will take time, but the proposed method is really ingenious. He had never heard of such a thing.

It’s a matter of practicing a lot and believing in yourself. Thanks, Blake.

  33. Joseph (verified owner)

Blake is taking on some seriously important abstractions in his new Discovering Your Visions (DYV) course.
The DYV course is attractive for multiple reasons, but the most attractive feature is its approach to “why” we create in the first place. And the “why” is not just a list of reasons to use this lens or that filter, choose this selection tool or change that exposure level, or use this key combination or that slider.
No, the “why” in this case is an exploration of the purpose and reason to even exert yourself to do ANY of this in the first place. Can I really “say” what I’m “seeing” so that someone else can “see” what I’m “saying”?
Instead of taking, editing, and making photographic art work, you could just go and have a beer right?
    Of course not.
There is something that drives humans to a higher instruction set.
While I believe some ideas presented in DYV that may need some supportive examples, (fMRI data on cognitive “flow” perhaps?) this course is an exploratory journey into the creative process itself. If you are serious about asking yourself what moves you emotionally, and more to the point, how an inner voice is driving you to express it, take this course.
Or, instead, you could go have a beer.
Do you see what I’m saying?

When the student is ready the teacher will appear. this course is what I have been looking for a long time.

  36. Al T. (verified owner)

This is the course I’d been looking for and didn’t know it! After enjoying the photographic hobby for many years, found myself in the doldrums…the excitement had left. Blake’s latest “Discovering Your Vision” couldn’t have come at a better time. It is like the missing link in a solid education. Typically, the presentation of the material is delivered in a down-to-earth, common sense fashion. Although some of the material may echo common jargon, Blake’s approach takes it beyond just words to one of ownership; delving into the detail to create your own artistic approach, using photography as your medium. Thanks to Blake, and his course material, a new door has been opened to an exciting path ahead.

  37. steve DICOSOLA (verified owner)

This course is a grand study of what happens in that chemical computer in our skulls which controls the handheld computer with it’s glass eye in our hand. Blake has dedicated himself to describing the result you may get at the instant of exposure, when one habitually combines ‘How you feel at the moment’ with โ€˜effortlessly recognizing scene componentsโ€™ and, ‘What do you remember from similar scenarios, to guide you. A fascinating, detail-oriented ride that one must grab the handrail and hold tight. It is well worth the ticket to for passage on the Consciousness Express.

  38. Thomas B. (verified owner)

While it was pretty “deep” for a photography course, it was exactly what I was looking for. I was beginning to think that my photography was becoming more documentary than artistic, as in “anyone with a camera in the same spot at the same time will get the same photo.” That was not where I wanted to be.

I plan to rewatch Discovering Your Vision and look forward to the Extended edition videos.

Your “Trying to be an artist, not a journalist” friend.

I was hoping for more. Of course, this may be impossible!

  42. Loretta F. (verified owner)

This is an amazing course. Although it might seem that how the brain functions with respect to artistry, the first module is extremely valuable, especially to those of us who are not artistic??. I haven’t gotten any further than this module, so I can’t comment on the rest, but if they’re up to Blake’s usual standard they will be excellent. From what I’ve gleaned from just a brief scan, I THINK it will take various aspects of a photo that some of us have learned melding them together AND together with brain function.

  43. ART B. (verified owner)

DYV is a refreshing recipe for moving past the mechanical and into the emotional inputs to photo image processing. Multiple mechanisms for engaging feelings such that they impact our post processing are explored. This is an โ€˜outside the boxโ€™ approach to achieving processed images that truly touch the viewers.

  44. Arthur Jacoby (verified owner)

If you want to learn how to move from being a phot0documentarian to an artist/photographer take the course.

  45. Denise W. (verified owner)

This was superb, it is going to take me to another level. Thank you

  46. Thomas Ford (verified owner)

Perhaps the most difficult course I have taken. That said, I truly believe that, with a lot of practice, it will improve my artistic vision. I’ve always believed that there was an artist in me someplace; now I know how to draw out that artist to produce what I expected my images to be. Until I took this course I only imagined what my images should look like. Now I have a process for knowing where I’m going with my post processing once I get into ACR and PhotoShop. Gone are the days, perhaps wasted, where I got into Ps and just started doing things to see what I could create, never arriving at a finished image that truly represented what I saw when I clicked the shutter.

I went ahead and bought this thinking that it might be a bit too much โ€œsoft scienceโ€, but I was pleasantly surprised. The content was amazing. I try to remember to wake up every morning saying โ€œI am an artist.โ€

This course is very different to any other tutorial that I’ve subscribed to, very deep, meaningful and is making me more conscious of my abilities (or lack of). I’m taking it very slowly, ensuring that I’m taking all of the provided information in as fully as I can.

I was sceptical, initially, that I was up to it but am of the opinion that this will probably be one of the most beneficial courses that I have ever undertaken. I did buy buy one of the books Blake recomended – The Forgetting Machine – and am finding it a fascinating read, complimenting Blake’s course really well.

My mind is exploding but I firmly believe that I am discovering my vision. Thank you, sincerely, for all the hard work you did producing the course. You have my heartfelt appreciation.

  52. Irmel (verified owner)

Hi Blake, thank you for these comprehensive videos! A lot to take in and think about! At the same time I am trying to follow your ‘Photoshop in 30 Days’, just love the way you are presenting it – but still so much to learn.

  53. Richard K. (verified owner)

I found this course to be a real eye opener. Focus on an area we all struggle with – identifying our personal artistic vision.

You have taken a subject, that I do not recall having been addressed and done an absolutely outstanding job of explaining it in clearly understandable terms. It truly is something that has practical application for anyone, at any level in their artistic journey. Incredibly well done, and illuminating! Thank you Blake!

I am not a Photoshop user but have subscribed to Blake’s webite for may years and often view his videos to learn how to better understand tones and colour management. The Discovering your vision course intersected a path I was pursuing to be more mindful on location, trying to feel more and remember colours because my image making had fallen into a rut. I am a member of a camera club and that means shooting a lot in a variety of genre. This course has come along at exactly the right time. I am 74 years old and pleased that neuroplasticity gives me hope I can rescue and develop my artistic vision. The connections of mood, memory and meta attention are a brilliant insight into how we tap into artistic vision. As someone who has had a lifelong sense of feelings and how they affect my disposition I am delighted with the deeper insight Blake has developed and now shares through this course.

This class opened me up to a side of me that’s always existed, but not fully realized. I would recommend this to any photographer/artist.

Love, Love, Love this course!! Can’t wait to use some of these concepts to take my photography to the next level! “Illusions in Post” and “When is it Enough” videos are eye opening to say the least!! Looking forward to the Extended Edition!! Thank you so much for creating a course like this, definitely my favorite of all the courses I’ve taken!

    Hey!
During the course, I discovered memories from my childhood that have held me back emotionally all these years. Became like a volcano of emotions and made me wake up and accept my emotions that have haunted me all my life. I’ve done a lot in my life so far, do not get me wrong. I enjoy my life as it is but I have not felt any joy with what I did before I started with photography. Somehow I have found joy in what I do thanks to this course and will find my vision. So thanks for waking an old man up!

  63. Stephanie D. (verified owner)

I found this course refreshing in its approach; inspiring and educational. Blake lets you inside his personal vision, and gives specific tools to help achieve your own. He encourages you (even challenges you) to become more intentional, passionate, and emotionally engaged in your photography and editing, in order to create your own unique work and to avoid simply emulating someone else’s.

  64. Sandy (verified owner)

Like all of Blake’s courses this is a well thought out and structured course. His ideas may work very well for some people, but I did not find them helpful. I did complete the course and it was interesting, but not something I will pursue further. (I am familiar with the books he cited in the course.) If you enjoy previsualization or compose for a specific vision on site, you will may enjoy this course. It is just something I cannot recommend for everyone.

  65. Cristen (verified owner)

With his Discover Your Vision course, Blake Rudis has done the brave thing of devoting a course not to new software features and techniques, but to the heart of what we strive forโ€”developing a personal style and giving meaning to the images we develop. Unfortunately for us who strive to be artists, the path is not as easy to teach as methods for taming Curves or creating masks. Itโ€™s therefore always risky for an instructor to try to help us find our way to artistic expression.

But Blake, with his usual persistence and ability to create logical systems out of creative chaos, gives us concrete guidance that, with practice, can help us to become the artist we seek to be. Itโ€™s not as elusive or intangible as many often make it out to be. This course is not one time around and youโ€™re done with it. There is no shortcut to becoming an artist. But there is a way to approach what we do both in camera and in post processing that demystifies much of the process. I hope this is only the start of future courses designed to help us focus more on the โ€œartโ€ of making art, with instruction in techniques playing a supportive role in the process, rather than being the star players most instructors usually treat them as.

I love everything you teach about! You’re experience as an artist inspires me to dig deeper in learning how to see and understand what makes not just a good image but an image which will allow the viewer to feel and honor it. Thank you!

    (1) This was an important course for me. I finished it (and the Directorโ€™s Cut) the week I received it but wanted some time to pass before commentingโ€”Iโ€™ve also reviewed certain portions a second time and โ€˜practicedโ€™ some of the take-homes. First off, I think you delivered what was promised in session 3 of the Vision Summit. I appreciated that you shared the personal foundation supporting your photographyโ€”family, faith, military service, and painter. Iโ€™ve noticed that photographic artists who began as painters have a special relationship with tone, color (especially), and expression.
    (2) Your discussion of โ€˜realityโ€™ was spot-on as it determines how our images reflect and hopefully communicate the who/what/why we are as humans. I now understand that my challenge is to communicate feeling based on my perceptions of reality, and that โ€˜anything goesโ€™ in doing so. Hopefully, fewer โ€œthatโ€™s niceโ€ reviews are in my future.
    (3) As an โ€˜old 70s hippieโ€™ from the Pacific NW I retired a year ago after being a professor of international conservation for 44 years (Cornell University in Ithaca, NY). During these years I developed an understanding/appreciation that exceptional teaching/mentoring was an art and science that also reflected who we areโ€”my record suggests that I was an โ€˜expertโ€™ successfully comfortable in my โ€œmotivation, self-worth, faith in myself (confidence), discovery, reward, and identity.โ€
    (4) With many years as a โ€˜hobby photographerโ€™ able to visit cool places for work I consider myself a โ€œcompetent+โ€ photographer. I have a โ€˜mothballedโ€™ B&W wet-chem darkroom and have been mostly digital since the early 2000s. However, I have been struggling over this last year to advance my photographic skills (now that I have more TIME for such). I now have a path to becoming more WHY DRIVEN in finding, crafting, expressing, and conveying my artistic vision. Yes, I now say โ€œI am a photographic artist.โ€

It took me a while to finish DYV but your many suggestions have already improved my results. I now carry a recorder with me and record my feelings about the scene I’m about to photograph and have used my recordings in post production. I do see an improvement in my finished images. So thank you for this and for the research you undertook.
Your review of the tools you use in post production was helpful. I would only wish you had included some info on the specs of the computer you use.
Anyway, good job. I’ll be watching the course again soon.

Blake, your lessons are quite thought provoking. I ending up stopping the video and thinking about what you said several times. With other training, I might go back and relisten to a portion of a training video, but in this case, I stopped, just to think about what you had said. Very good. A PhD Biochemist thinking about art. Seems like somethings off with that thought. Do I have artistic vision? Maybe, as I enjoy the scent of my “white fir” candle.

I have bought several of your seminars, and everything was great, and they have helped me a lot. But unfortunately, I cannot say the same about this. I realize that you have put a lot of time and work into preparing this seminar. But it is tough to watch. Personally, I could not complete it. I expected it to be something else.

  86. Colin Baterip (verified owner)

I have purchased a number of courses from f64 and they have all exceeded my expectations and this one was no exception. Blake Rudis provides a huge amount of information but presents it in a logical, well thought out, understandable and enjoyable manner. This course provides a fascinating insight into how the brain works and how as photographers we can understand this power and use it to discover our own artistic vision. It is packed with pratical ideas and additional study suggestions and I would recommend it to anyone striving to find a more creative direction for their work.

This was a perfect fit for the direction I am moving my photography to. It gave me the tools to hone my vision along with the more than thought provoking way to see as a possible client. Some would want more of a tutorial on how to accomplish certain things in processing an image. However I think that this is indispensable since it is a visionary look instead of just a tool tutorial. This was a game changer for me!

  89. Tim Cooper (verified owner)

Itโ€™s hard to say itโ€™s the best class he offers because itโ€™s in such a DIFFERENT CLASS than the rest. It is excellent! Because my camera shoots video and the video files are downloaded and stored in sequence with the raw photos, going forward I will record shot notes in the video mode, even though it feels odd to be talking to myself. I try paper/pencil notes but itโ€™s too awkward to do consistently.

As a retired educator and developer of multimedia teaching materials, I commend you on your teaching methods. I spent the last five years photographing wildlife in Sri Lanka. 10 years of living with the animals convinced me I had to capture and share the essence of their beings. Through this venture with you I began to understand what I was trying to do with my art and gave myself permission to express it in ways that the feeling could come through more powerfully. The connection with God’s world and the desire to help people appreciate even the least of God’s creatures was confirmed with what you shared. How to focus on light and color to impact the image became even more real for me. Thank you for your very personal approach to teaching. It is a technique that I shared with the teachers I taught for years and I think is the appropriate approach to gain trust and respect that allow for more impact in delivery. I loved the whole thing.

Extremely well done. What may be Blake’s best course to date, and all his courses are great!

Enjoying your courses and your teaching style. Looking forward to completing this course. It is forcing me to think about what I am doing and be more intentional. Will comment again once I am done with the course.

This is a fabulous course that I have been looking for a long time. To say I’m delighted is an understatement. Great course Blake keep up the good work.

I think that this is a great guide for those photographers who wish to move from taking photos to creating works of art that convey their vision. If you take this path you will push and challenge yourself. It is worth the effort.

I put off purchasing this course for the last 6 months as I had previously gone through my own personal journey many years ago with NLP, creating a vision for my life…and yes, I even walked on hot coals with Tony Robbins! I had also written a book on helping people apply these techniques to their health and fitness and had since studied neuroscience (but am far from being a Neuroscientist!). Whilst a lot of the techniques in the course served me well as a refresher and reminder, I was pleasantly surprised at how much this course helped with the application to photography. Blake has a natural talent when it comes to being an educator, and his open and honest approach is refreshingly different. I would highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to connect with their photography on a deeper level, and in turn, forming better connections with those who view your photography/art.

Iโ€™m still on module 1, but Blakeโ€™s intro to brain-eye function is good. Looking forward to the rest of the course.

The VP panel is great but your training is not only essential to using it, it’s enjoyable, informative, and inspirational! Thanks, too, for your personal story, especially about your faith journey. True artistry is about so much more than tools, training, and techniques. And you are a true artist.

Wow, this education has opened my eyes to how to evaluate my own images and how to apply tools that make an image pop in the eyes of the viewer

As Blake states many times in the course, there is a great deal on information to process in this course. I am still processing it all. Our Brain lies and no two Artistic Visions are the same, are the Big takeaways I am still processing.
This course should be one of the first ones on the list of education to grow your mind in photography or any other field of the arts. This is a good way to develop a path to finding your Vision. I still have a way to go in finding my Vision, but with these tools I have a path to follow.
    Thanks Blake

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. “Discovering Your Vision” did a great job of introducing me to Blake and to bring my “Vision” into focus. “DYV” grounded me in the station I am at and where Blake’s track might take me.

I’m at the point where in order to take the next step I need to see things like an artist. While step by step how to tutorials are good and necessary this goes beyond that to help you view the photography world differently. I can’t recommend this more if you wish to tap into your vision.

I have just started the vision. I’ve been photographing for many years. I was startled about 10 years ago when the leader of a portfolio class I was in referred to us as “artists”. I recoiled from that description. After watching two of the first group of videos and reviewing my many images from years past, I have come to accept that the term “artist” describes me. That was hard to do. I’m not sure what I thought an artist was but I was sure it wasn’t me. I’m now trying to get my preconceptions out of my way. I’ve made images. A few have been in shows. I can do better. I’m not sure what the rest of the videos will show me but the first two were an awakening.
