Masking in Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom is not easy. You have a whole new interface with several new mask additions and they threw out the concept of the Adjustment Tools like bad bathwater. Several items have been rearranged and the whole Add, Subtract, and Intersect Mask thing… Forget about it!

I’m still learning how to use ZSE-RAW effectively in Lightroom and in Photoshop. The most significant problem I had with the program was in installation. I use both Mac and PC machines and the same problem existed for both. Instead of the icons shown in the install video I only saw zipped files. After many attempts to install the files I finally dragged the zipped files and the system was installed.
I encountered difficulties with generating the masks and with the differences between working with both Lightroom and ACR. However, after mistake after mistake, persistence paid off and I am fairly confident I can mask almost any area and subject.

Blake has done it again!! The Zone System Express – RAW (ZSE_RAW) course dramatically altered my workflow. Blake not only explains and demonstrates ACR Masks and Presets but offers Presets as well. I now think of ACR Masks in much the same way as Masks in Photoshop. My workflow in ACR now creates a much more natural, ready to edit image in Photoshop. I find myself creating fewer Layers and Mask in Photoshop than before resulting in smaller files. (I cannot wait to start creating my own Presets.) But do not think that ACR Masks are the same as Photoshop Masks, Blake explains and demonstrates these differences in his video ‘RAW Masks vs Photoshop Masks’. For serious image processing The Zone System Express – RAW (ZSE_RAW) course is a must!

At present masking is better in Photoshop, but as it has only just been introduced in ACR, it is likely that Adobe will refine and improve the masking in ACR. The new mask system for local adjustments in Lightroom opens possibilities that was only reserved for Photoshop people before. First though was: Hey I’m fully familiar with all that Lightroom stuff and NO, by any chance, I don’t need any preset anymore at all. Mostly using Zones rather than Regions without contrast+ adjustment. I find the contrast adjustment quite agressive and the highlights and shadow ajustements to extreme. I have created my own presets with highlights and shadows at -50 and +50 respectively and less contrast.

Awesome product! My workflow starts in Lightroom and not every photo requires the surgical processing of the Zone System panel in Photoshop. The Zone System RAW allows me to do the same Zone System workflow in Lightroom (or Camera Raw) easily and quickly! Great job Blake – thank you for creating Zone System RAW!

I recently came back to ACR after years away from Adobe products. The education included in Blake’s ZSE RAW made the transition very easy. Targeting tonal zones with masks within ACR is so easy with this workflow. The starting point of the photo I’m bringing into Photoshop is much farther along thanks to ZSE RAW. If you shoot in raw, this product is well worth your time.
